Kinosaki & Kusatsu Onsen Course: Two Classic Towns

If you want the postcard version of Japanese onsen towns, Kinosaki and Kusatsu are the cleanest pairing: one is about strolling in yukata between public baths, the other about serious mineral water and mountain air.
How to sequence them
They are not next-door neighbors. Treat this as two separate legs on a longer Japan trip (Kansai ↔ Gunma/Tokyo axis), not a casual same-day hop.
Suggested: 2 nights Kinosaki → travel day → 1–2 nights Kusatsu → Tokyo or reverse.
Kinosaki — bath passport nights
Check into a ryokan, change into yukata, and hop the town’s public baths with a yu-meguri passport. Dinner at the ryokan still matters — the street hop is the evening theater.

Kusatsu — strong water, highland calm
Kusatsu’s yumomi show and outdoor yubatake are worth seeing once, but the stay is about the baths. Sulfuric water can be intense — start with shorter soaks.

Practical tips
- Book weekends early in both towns
- Bring a small towel for public baths; follow local tattoo rules
- For Kusatsu, confirm bus/train connections from Karuizawa or Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi
Open the OKOnsen map, filter Private / Luxury / Local, and Compare three Kusatsu or Kinosaki stays before you lock dates.
